Southeastern Wisconsin tax bills higher despite lower tax rates

Local elected officials in southeastern Wisconsin pride themselves on keeping
their tax rates low and their tax rate increases even lower. Comparing the tax rate of
one community to another is a favorite pastime among policymakers and home
buyers alike. Suburban communities with lower tax rates often market themselves as
an escape from the high taxes of the city. But tax rates are not the only factor in
determining a homeowner’s tax bill. Our new analysis shows that a home’s value has
a much greater impact on the tax bill than does the tax rate.
